Sport Dev Gov & Globalization
This course will explore topics related to the development of sport from the local to the global, as well as the uses of sport
for political purposes and social impact. The Canadian sport system will be analyzed, including the role of youth clubs,
schools, provincial/national programs, and professional franchises in the development of sporting
opportunities/excellence and cultural identities. The role of transnational sport organizations (e.g. FIFA) and oversight
agencies (e.g. WADA), as well as the emergence of globally recognized athletic clubs (e.g. Manchester United) and brands
(e.g. Nike), will be considered in the context of sport internationalization, athletic representation, and the
commercialization of sport. Debates related to the uses of sport in cultural and political contexts and the use of sport as a tool
to influence social change will be critically considered. Cross-listed with GS343.
Prerequisites: Registration status: Year 3 or Year 4 of Honours Kinesiology program.
